Advanced sperm preparation
In addition to the basic sperm preparation protocols, there are some more advanced techniques that our Lab can employ in more severe cases of male infertility. These advanced techniques allow for improved sperm selection and improve the chances of fertilization.
The most notable of these techniques is microfluidic sorting. This technique utilizes specially prepared chips that force sperm cells to swim through microchannels in a porous material, thus simulating the demanding conditions that sperm faces naturally during its journey to the oocyte.
Due to the demanding nature of this sorting process, only healthy spermatozoa have the necessary reserves to make it across, whereas, abnormal, damaged or otherwise dysfunctional ones (more likely to fail in fertilization or result in genetic anomalies in the embryo) are filtered out.
This stricter quality control method is optimal for cases with:
- Increased DFI
- Increased oxidative stress
- Teratospermia (high percentage of abnormal sperm forms)
- Recurrent miscarriages
