Sperm cryopreservation
Sperm cryopreservation is a means of ensuring that healthy, fertile sperm is safely kept and is available in the future if it is needed. Research has shown that unfortunately sperm quality has been decreasing in general as years go by, with our modern lifestyle, excessive stress and even environmental pollution negatively affecting male fertility. Lengthy working hours in a seated position, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and elevated daily stress are only a few risk factors, which are further exacerbated by advancing age.
Therefore, taking the initiative sooner rather than later and preparing a back-up plan may help avoid the need for additional procedures and associated costs and increase the odds of success.
Sperm cryopreservation is recommended in the following cases:
- Men who wish to postpone their family plan but wish to retain the fertility potential of a younger age and avoid the cumulative negative effects of aging on sperm quality.
- Men who have to receive testicular or prostate surgery, interventions that have been associated with harmful effects on sperm production and functionality.
- Men who are about to receive chemotherapy in the context of cancer treatment or radiotherapy of the pelvic area.
- Men with occupational exposure to chemical substances, excessive heat or radiation.
- Men with progressively worsening sperm parameters and sexual function.
