Embryo cryopreservation
Embryo cryopreservation is an important cornerstone of modern Reproductive Medicine, as it allows for the storage of surplus embryos that may result from IVF and their use in the future. Embryo cryopreservation technology increases the number of potential attempts that are available to a couple or individual, without necessitating the start of a new stimulation cycle for each attempt.
If pregnancy is achieved, these embryos may remain in storage until they are needed for a second pregnancy, or they could be donated or discarded if the desired family plan has been achieved. Donated embryos may be utilized in scientific research, or may be offered for altruistic reasons to an individual or couple that is unable to produce their own (see embryo donation).
Modern freezing methods such as vitrification and well tested storage protocols ensure that the quality and implantation potential of preserved embryos is not affected and research has shown that embryos could be stored for years without significant impairment.
